For many years I have been able to find a hamburger at kebaps in Avignon. There the burgers are hopeful approxiations of a MacDOnald's burger, but a little sad; usually they have been pressed in a pannini press and are handy enough to eat while walking.
Beginning in 2012, becoming more common in 2013, and now found all over the country, is a French restaurant version of the burger. C'est manifique. A very generous and tasty griled beef patty is layered with a thick slice of ementhal, plus lettuce, tomato and onion, in a good and sturdy bun from the boulangerie. This isn't fast food! There is no way it can be eaten in hand, not that the French like to do that anyhow. Even knife and fork is a challenge unless one proceeds to at least partly deconstruct the monster.
